| 3rd EK Open Round 1 |
Ever wondered what happens when you have 60 people in a room playing chess and only 2 arbiters?? We found out yesterday.
60 entries for the 3rd East Kilbride Weekly Open and according to Dougie Bryson, the biggest that he can remember for at least 30 years. 6 byes were taken in the first round which gave us a nice even 54. Everyone arrived on time, with 2 notable exceptions, so after 30 minutes we were forced to re-pair boards 2 and 4. This meant that Alan and Craig played each other.
The game follows. If there is one thing I have learned about Alan's game, it is to beware of advancing pawns, something he uses to great effect in this game.

35 minutes gone and 2 rather stressed players appeared. They had been travelling together and there had been a problem with the bus. Who were the two? I could not possibly say but here is their game ;-)

If there was a prize for the neatest scoresheet, Ian Marks would win hands down. It is a game compiler's dream and so easy to read. Was quite a good game as well. Almost everything off by move 18 and settles down nicely to an endgame on move 19! **Update** Ian has been in contact and given the moves that took place after both had stopped scoring. Thanks Ian!

Towards the other end of the hall, several players were making their first appearance in a congress. One of them is known either as Rowan's Dad or Brogan's Dad (depending on who you are playing) and this was his first long play tournament game. The combination that leads to the win is a thing of beauty:-) This was my game of the round

So we have had a few shocks, some great games and I wonder what Round 2 will bring in 2 weeks time.
